Why Riichi?

A game worth gathering for.

A shared set of tiles becomes a contest of probability, patience, and bold decisions. Every discard reveals something.

01

Tactical from the first discard

Build your hand while reading the table, managing risk, and adapting as the round changes.

02

Social by design

Riichi is played face to face, four seats at a time. The table is where the game—and the community—comes alive.

03

Always another layer

The basics are approachable. The depth keeps players returning, hand after hand.

What is Riichi mahjong?

Riichi is the Japanese ruleset for four-player mahjong. Players build winning hands while balancing speed, value, and the risk of dealing into an opponent.

Is this the tile-matching game?

No. Riichi is a competitive tabletop game played with four people—closer to a strategy card game than a solitaire puzzle.

Do I need to know how to play?

Not at all. Let us know where you’re starting from, and we’ll help point you toward the right table and learning resources.

Where and when does the club meet?

Our mahjong meetups are usually held in the afternoon at the University of Alberta. Dates, locations, and other event details are posted regularly in our Discord server.

What should I bring?

You do not need to bring anything. Club members usually bring mahjong sets for everyone to use, so new members can simply come ready to learn and play.
